My thoughts on Puerto Madero are know to regular readers of this site. Lately I’ve been doing a lot of work, spending most of my days, in one of those office buildings along the waterway.
What I didn’t previously realize is that some of those buildings have nice rooftop patios, nice spots for lunch. If you work in this area then it’s best to bring your own lunch since the area is filled with overpriced and not so good restaurants. I noticed this week that a Hooters has opened in Puerto Madero. That must be a sign that the economy is recovering. (Wasn’t there one in Village Recoleta a few years back?)
Anyway, the rooftop terrace makes for a nice view so I thought I would post a photo since few people get to see the area from that angle.

hey jeff,
the city has to do more with puerto m.
it’s quite sterile and feels like
battery park city in manhattan. no soul as far
as i could sense on a couple of visits.
let us know if there are any compelling reasons
to go there beyond the restaurants.
glad to see u posting more often.
best,
e

Great photo, Jeff. I can’t believe someone got permission to build that monster tower in the background. The other day on a tour in Plaza de Mayo, I noticed that it sticks out like a sore thumb even from that distance. Can you imagine a fully developed Puerto Madero with dozens of torres? Ick.

I think the view is fantastic with or without the tower. I don’t agree that the area is soulless. PM is s wonderful, creative use of what had been a dead waterfront. The area is attractive, cheerful, clean and safe. I admit that there is uniformity to the restaurants (is this a policy imposed on the restaurants?). The problem for the people who live in PM is the underveloped nature of the area on the other side of the canal. There are no shops, supermarkets etc. You need a car to get around. This, however, will change in time.

I think the friday afternoon fairs and markets down in PM are a good start towards developing a localized culture, but its still doesn’t seem to tie togather with the shiny towers and upscale renovated warehouses.

The website states “Buenos Aires – city of faded elegance” at the top. It seems that a lot of expats think that everything should be faded to have character and not be “sterile”. The scene in the PM photo above is magnificent and anything but faded. It is true modern elegance! BA needs more of this and less of the tawdry that passes for “local color”.

I use to lunch at those expensive restaurants when I go to BsAs, but only on weekdays when cheaper menus are offered to regular mortals like me. And I really like the view around. I don’t know, it has some charm I can not resist, although I admit the whole place has the seal of the Menemist bourgeoisie of the 90’s. I once had the chance to enter the offices located over the restaurants but I didn’t know you could get to the roof. Good photo and thank you for sharing it with us!
