(Came here via <a href="http://baires.elsur.org/archives/english-language-bookstores-in-buenos-aires/" rel="nofollow">this recent post</a>.)

The key question: where was it published? If Uruguay (as I suspect), then I have also noticed how few books manage to cross the Río de la Plata. I remember once looking for a book (<i>La ciudad letrada</i>, I think) in Bs As. No joy at all. Then I went to Montevideo, and you could hardly move for the stacks of Rama in the bookstores.

Hey, I'm trying to find a book in B A, too, but with the added problem of being in the US. Your post gave me lots of bookstore names to contact in my search, but, having read it, I'm not sure if I'm just on a wild goose chase. I'm trying to locate a used edition of Juan Suriano's
"Anarquistas: cultura y politica libertario en Buenos Aires, 1890-1910". Also, trying to find a B.A. street plan map circa 1900-1910, but haven't a clue where to start looking for that. Don't want some expensive archival version, just a paper map or a copy of one. Suggestions welcome. In the meantime, I'll resort to making a few long distant calls to ARG. and hope they don't put me on hold.
Really enjoyed your cool style. Will look for more.

It took me a long time to read this post, Jeff, because every five lines I had to stop reading until my laugh was over: the story is absolutely true, as I told you in a previous message, for I have suffered the same situation, specially at fancy bookstores like El Ateneo and Cuspide where you also have to suffer the unhelpful staff. Can you imagine what will happen if you go there with the 100-best list of books? Surely they will tell you that such list comes from another planet since they do not recognize most of the authors.
Seriously, the list seems to be a good research since nothing by Coelho or Bucay appears in it.

Hi Gricelle,

You should definitely read Galeano. Perhaps his greatest book is Las Venas Abiertas de America Latina. And that's more easy to find in BsAs.

I've heard of this author but I've never read any of his books. Maybe I'll try it now. :)
