Why? Because the Grossman translation is simply a better translation according to most people who have read it and also read the Spanish. It’s hardly less intelligent.

Why would someone want to read a 400 year old book translated into a modern idiom? Should Fielding’s Tom Jones and Sterne’s Tristram Shandy be updated? What about Cervante’s Spanish? Surely they’re outdated! Yes, Edith Grossman’s translation is “more readable”, if by “more readable” one means to say “simple” and “less intelligent”.
